James Graham's affectionate, insightful play explores the growing pains of moving away from home and family, finding a job, seeking out love: in short, the journey towards becoming a man.
The play uses the charming ruse of inviting the audience to quiz Ben, the main character, on his life by reading out receipts they've been handed as he works through his annual tax return.
“This is my first tax return. Thank you…erm for offering to… for helping. I realise it’s a bit weird. It’s just. This is…it’s the only way I can think to make it better. The only way I can think to do it. With other people. Like this.”
The Man opened at the Finborough theatre in summer 2010 as part of the Vibrant season. The lead part was performed by a number of different actors, including James himself.
